Joaquín González

Joaquín González Cuevas (Cuba, 1961) is an artist with a solid and extensive international career, developed continuously from the early 1980s to the present day. His pictorial work, the central axis of his artistic production, is characterized by the intensity of colour, the vitality of forms, and a singular ability to convey emotion and energy to the viewer through his canvases. Over more than four decades of creation, his work has evolved with coherence, consolidating a recognizable and deeply sensory visual identity.

His first exhibitions took place in Madrid in the early 1980s, particularly at Galería El Treco, where he exhibited regularly between 1980 and 1985. From these early years, his painting stood out for its distinctive expressive language and its direct connection with the public. In 1982, he expanded his international projection for the first time with an exhibition in Caracas alongside his mentor at Galería Las Mercedes, initiating an early international presence that confirmed interest in his work beyond the Spanish context.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, his painting gained greater visibility in relevant cultural and institutional spaces such as the Egyptian Institute in Madrid, the Puerta de Toledo Cultural Center (Arte América), and Galería Azteca, strengthening his position within the Madrid art scene and reinforcing his recognition as a painter with a solid and personal artistic discourse.

In the following years, he exhibited his pictorial work in museums and historic spaces such as the Hermitage of San José and the Hermitage of San Roque in Sigüenza, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art Santo Domingo (Guadalajara). At the same time, his international trajectory was consolidated with exhibitions in Miami, including participation in a group exhibition at the Museum of the Americas, expanding the reach of his work beyond the European sphere.

From 2006 onwards, his exhibition activity intensified significantly through participation in art fairs, solo and group exhibitions, and presentations in singular cultural spaces. Notable among these was his presence at FAIM – Independent Art Fair, held at the Madrid Exhibition and Congress Center, as well as exhibitions in Palma de Mallorca, Benidorm, and Huesca, and shows in cultural centers such as the Ateneo Escurialense. During this period, painting was firmly established as the core of his artistic language, while sculpture was gradually incorporated as a three-dimensional extension of his visual universe.

Throughout the 2010s, he maintained a steady presence in museums, galleries, and cultural spaces, with exhibitions at the Museum of the Schools of Guadalajara, the Centro Riojano of Madrid, and solo shows at Galería Joaquín González. In 2013, he presented Dreams of Light, an exhibition that reinforced the luminous and emotional character of his painting and his interest in transmitting positive sensations through colour, featuring both pictorial and sculptural works.

In recent years, his international projection within the contemporary art circuit has been notably strengthened by his sculpture JOGO, conceived as a three-dimensional extension of his pictorial language and linked to an aesthetic close to New Pop Art.   Presented at Art Basel Miami in 2022, this work positioned his practice on one of the most influential stages of contemporary art worldwide.

This projection has been consolidated through his participation in fairs and platforms such as World Art Fair Dubai, Artist 360 Art Fair, Artist Experience Art Fair, and Art Fair 360 Madrid, as well as exhibitions in spaces such as Moraleja Green. Through these events, his pictorial work, together with his sculptural proposals, has attracted the interest of private collectors, gallerists, and international audiences, expanding his presence in private collections worldwide.

In 2025, he continues his exhibition activity in emblematic spaces in Madrid such as the ABC Serrano Luxury Shopping Center and The Hotel Emperador, reaffirming the relevance, contemporaneity, and constant evolution of his work.

Today, Joaquín González Cuevas is recognized for a distinctive artistic language in which painting occupies a central place as a medium of emotional and sensory expression. Colour and form act as direct vehicles of communication with the viewer, while his sculptures—among them the iconic JOGO—are naturally integrated as an expansion of his creative universe, consolidating him as an artist with a solid, fully established international trajectory.
